The Mark V Toyota Supra has been updated for 2021, now available in 2 standard models and one limited edition A91 model.

First is the Supra 2.0 with a 4 cylinder turbo charged engine; a BMW sourced B48B20 from the JDM SZR model, previously only available in Asia and Europe.

Sourced from BMW this engine has seen wide use across their fleet since 2014 and has been shipped with up to 302hp from factory. Given it's potential and well known reliability, I look forward to seeing how this is developed in the Supra by the aftermarket.

  • Twin-scroll turbocharger
  • Direct injection
  • Variable valve lift (Valvetronic)
  • Variable valve timing (Double VANOS)
  • 255 hp at 5,000-6,500 rpm
  • 295 lb.-ft. peak torque at 1,550 to 4,400 rpm
  • 8-speed automatic transmission
  • Projected 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds
  • MPG will be lower but not specified

This smaller engine in the 2.0, along with several other enhancements, have also made it more than 200 pounds lighter than the 3.0 variant.

  • Smaller front brake rotors than the Supra 3.0
    • 330mm x 24mm vs. 348mm x 36mm
  • Single-piston calipers vs. the 3.0's four-piston.
  • No Active Differential or Adaptive Suspension
  • A four-speaker audio system, vs. the Supra 3.0’s 10-speaker system.
  • Manually adjustable Seats, vs. 14-way power-adjustable in the 3.0

Next in the lineup is the update of the 3.0 Variant, which has been fine tuned to further enhance the rigidity of the chassis and boost power output.

  • 382 hp at 5,800-6,500 rpm
    • Previously 335 hp at 5,000-6,500 rpm
  • 368 lb.-ft. at 1,800-5,000
    • Previously 368 lb.-ft. at 1,800-5,000
  • Revised front and rear bump stops
  • Lightweight aluminum braces that tie the strut towers to the radiator support to increase lateral rigidity
  • New piston design reduces the engine’s compression ratio from 11:1 to 10.2:1 in order to prevent abnormal combustion due to high boost.
  • Revised programming for the following components:
    • Dampers
    • Electric power steering
    • Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS)
    • Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
    • Active Differential
  • 0-60 acceleration time to 3.9 seconds, down from 4.1
  • Estimated 25 mpg combined (22 city/30 highway/25 combined)

Last in the lineup is the very limited A91 edition, with only 1,000 units being produced. Similar to the Launch Edition Supra, the differences are mostly aesthetic, with the A91 sharing the same technical specifications as the 3.0
  • Rear black carbon fiber lip spoiler
  • Matte black wheels
  • C-pillar graphics
  • Carbon fiber mirror caps
  • Black Alcantara® leather-trimmed interior with blue contrast
  • Blue Stitching Detail
  • Two exclusive key gloves and trunk mat.

This new exploration of the capabilities of the Mark V platform signify a renewed commitment from Toyota in the excitement of driving, a feature that was inevitably lost in the pursuit of efficiency and economy. I can't wait to see what else is in store for the Mark V Supra as it continues to evolve, ever closer to reclaiming the legendary status upheld by the Mark IV.
